Our brain and systems of sensation give us the
means to create the World out there - inside. This process is an
extension of more basic inside/outside control mechanism ranging
across all living creatures.
Having the basic biological tools is only the
beginning. The human ability to abstract the World in concepts and
"play" with them in combinations and sequences give us abilities
beyond any other creature on Earth.
1.3.1 Good Regulator
Modeling Our Way to Control
Skip the math... a Good Regulator must have an
"out there" - "in here" to navigate. In the sort game, this can be
as simple as reacting to immediate stimuli like pain, pleasure,
fear, etc.
The long game is very different. Since we develop
language with abstract concepts that can be exercised "locally"
i.e. in the brain, we can guess about the future with greater
latitude... and longitude!
1.3.2 Modeling Me-You-Me-You...
Coming Out!
As babies and children interact with others and
develop they solidify the image of their body (self?) as an entity.
This differentiation extends to the other people in their social
environment as well. Children are self-centered drawing resources
to themselves in a direct way.
Others, caregivers et al, are eventually modeled
as unique self-contained entities (Theory of Mind - TOM) and the
child can now change their social environment though manipulation
as well as through direct physical contact. (About 4 years
old.)
